It is a fair question to ask before you put a new floor through your whole home: is vinyl flooring safe to live on, or does it give off something you would rather not breathe? Here is an honest answer, including what vinyl is really made of and what to check before you buy.

Is vinyl flooring toxic, or safe to live on?
For a modern, reputable product, safe. What vinyl flooring is actually made of
There is no point pretending otherwise: the wear and décor layers of SPC are made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a plastic. What makes SPC different from old vinyl is the core. "Stone polymer composite" means a rigid core of powdered limestone bound with a small amount of polymer, so most of the plank by weight is stone, not plastic.
That matters for indoor air in one specific way: the core is stone and polymer, not wood glued together with resin. So unlike laminate and engineered wood, an SPC floor is not built around a formaldehyde-based wood adhesive in the first place. Hana’s SPC is made without added formaldehyde.
The two things that actually matter: VOCs and formaldehyde
For any floor, the indoor-air question comes down to two things, and it helps to know what each one means.
A VOC (volatile organic compound) is a chemical that evaporates from a material into the air at room temperature; a brand-new floor, paint or piece of furniture giving off a faint smell is VOCs off-gassing, and the US EPA notes that levels are highest when a product is new and fall as it airs out. A good hard floor emits very little; the point is to choose one tested to be low, and to ventilate the room for the first days after laying.
Formaldehyde is one specific VOC, a known irritant that the US EPA regulates in composite wood products. It comes mainly from wood adhesives, which is why it is a laminate and engineered-wood question more than a stone-cored SPC one.
